Journal 1: Shakespeare on the Internet

Goals:

-        To find and analyze a single image without external sources

-        To practice recording impressions and notes on an exhibit source

Methodology:

Find an image of “Shakespeare” on the internet. The image does not actually have to be Shakespeare. It can be someone else pretending to be Shakespeare. It can be a cartoon of Shakespeare. It can be (yes, it exists) a LolCat in a Shakespeare outfit. However, it must be Shakespeare himself, and not a character from one of his plays.

With this image in mind, write 350-500 words about what that image means: what is it trying to communicate about Shakespeare or his works? What is the point of the image? Is it “respectful” of Shakespeare? Is it “offensive”? Is it funny? Why? How does the composition of the image (the medium used, the colors, the “professionalism” of the image, its period of creation) impact its overall message?

Conclude with one-two sentences explaining why you chose this image.

The Catch:

You cannot choose an image already chosen by another classmate. That means there will need to be 20 different images of Shakespeare (there are more than enough out there, I promise). Email me with a link or file of your chosen image before you begin writing (you may wish to send more than one, in order of preference). I will let you know whether or not it has already been chosen and will post it here so that others can see what images are being used.
