Duration (time distribution)

This Lesson will take place during an 75 minute block period (or span over the course of two to three 45 minute lessons)

            5 minutes:  Engagement Activity

Extraction of vocabulary from nutrition labels.

            10 minutes:  Discussion of Prior Knowledge

                  What students know about food as energy

10 minutes:  Students design calorimeters (most efficient way to

        measure energy of food)

20 minutes:  Discussion of the calorimeters

Build a picture of a class calorimeter (using best ideas from all drawings)

Compare to the calorimeter that nutrition companies actually use to measure the number of Calories in a food sample. 

15 minutes:  Introduction (and sample questions) of the equation

              q = mCpΔT

10 minutes:  Introduction of the food eaten in Medieval Times.

5 minutes:  Closure Activity
