What is Calorimetry?

Calorimetry is the measurement of heat.  Specifically, calorimetry is the label of the area of chemistry that measures the amount of energy contained within a food sample.  The image to the right is a "Bomb Calorimeter".  A food sample is placed within a metal device and is burnt.  Energy released from the burning of the sample heats the water surrounding the cup, holding the sample of food.  A Bomb Calorimeter is used to measure the amount of Calories in food!  This simple experiment is how nutritionists calculate the amount of Calories in your favorite foods!  Every time you look at a Nutrition Label, you are reading the results of a chemistry experiment!
