Why exponential growth and decay?


Never underestimate how fast something can grow or how fast it can disappear!    Researchers and scientists often say that if people understood what "exponential" means, they would not be so sluggish to act on problems that do not seem to be increasing at a very fast rate, or be so bold to expect something like oil to be abundant forever.  Earth is full of examples of exponential growth and decay, including human population, carbon dioxide gas emissions, and the amount of coal being mined.  Students will come to understand, through experience and example, what it means for something to exponentially increase or exponentially decay.
