Both pieces in this section are commentary publications about a modern issue with historical roots. Juliana’s publication focuses on the Asian theater, looking at the impacts of the split between China and Taiwan. The One China Principle looms large in present day, adding to instability to an already divided region. China’s refusal to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state results in considerable barriers for artifact exchange. Kara’s piece, How the Obsession with Ancient Goddesses Leads to Exclusive Feminism, reports on a new trend called goddess pilgrimages. These pilgrimages take women to sacred archaeological sites where goddesses and priestesses once inhabited, and claim to hold feminist values. However, Kara argues that these tours are very exclusive, only aimed toward white, affluent women. Despite the differences between the two pieces, both comment on topics which cast a wide shadow on contemporary society and should be addressed.
