My name is Cathryn and the purpose of this project is to explore performance pracitice of the works of Giovanni Gabrieli, both at Basilica San Marco, where he was employed as organist and composer, and in modern performances. San Marco is a very special performance space, which surely influenced works composed for services there and how they were performed. Musicians today can't help but conjure images of that glorious structure when perfoming Gabrieli, and with rare exception, are inspired to try to recreate the sound the composer must have heard. Through study of performance practice in Gabrieli's day, as well as examination of modern performance practice, I hope that an outcome of this project is that I and those who view this porfolio become more informed performers of Giovanni Gabrieli's works.
